Driving in Italy
๐ก Local Driving Tips
- โZTL (Zona Traffico Limitato) zones in historic city centres are camera enforced โ rental cars often get fined automatically. Confirm with your rental company.
- โMotorway tolls are extensive โ budget โฌ30โ60 for Rome to Milan.
- โDriving in Naples or Rome can be chaotic โ consider parking outside the centre.
- โHeadlights must be on at all times outside urban areas.
- โPull to the right immediately when you hear sirens. In built-up areas it is common for Italian drivers to mount the kerb if necessary to clear a path for emergency vehicles.
๐ฃ๏ธ Key Driving Words in Italian
You may not speak the language, but knowing these words on road signs and at toll booths can save you from confusion โ or a fine.
๐ฆ Speed Limits
110 km/h on motorways in rain. 90 km/h on rural roads in rain.
๐ณ Toll Roads & Vignettes

๐ท Speed Cameras
Camera Types in Italy
- ๐ทAutovelox (fixed cameras) โ on motorways, state roads, and urban approach roads
- ๐ทScout Speed or mobile units โ operated by Polizia Stradale and Carabinieri
- ๐ทTutor / SICVE (average speed) โ calculates speed between two gantry points on motorways
- ๐ทRed-light cameras at major urban intersections
โฌ41 for minor excess up to โฌ3,382 for >60 km/h over the limit. Licence suspension for serious offences.
Italy's Tutor average-speed system on motorways is extremely effective. Your speed is calculated between toll gates and camera gantries โ there is no safe point to accelerate. Fines are mailed to the rental company and passed on with an admin surcharge, sometimes months later.
๐ ฟ๏ธ Parking Signs & Zones
Understanding parking zones and road markings can save you a fine or a tow. Here is what each colour and sign means in Italy.
Parking Zones Explained
Paid parking. Pay at the parchimetro (ticket machine) or via the EasyPark app. Display the printed ticket on the dashboard. Common in city centres and near tourist sites.
Free parking, usually with no time limit unless a nearby sign specifies otherwise. Always check for time-restriction signs before assuming it is free.
Reserved parking โ for residents, disabled drivers, or loading zones. No public parking. A double yellow kerb means no stopping at any time.
Display a parking disc showing your arrival time. Free for the period shown (usually 1โ2 hours). Discs are available from tourist offices and petrol stations.
