Driving in Slovakia
💡 Local Driving Tips
- →An IDP is required in Slovakia for US licence holders — Slovak police request it alongside your US state licence.
- →Purchase the electronic vignette (eznamka) online before entering Slovakian motorways — it is linked to your licence plate digitally. No sticker needed on the windscreen.
- →Zero alcohol tolerance applies — any detectable alcohol results in fines and possible criminal charges.
- →Bratislava is small but congested — the centre has a pedestrian zone. Use park-and-ride facilities outside the old town.
- →The High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) are beautiful — mountain roads require care and winter tyres are compulsory November to March.
- →When an emergency vehicle approaches, form a central corridor on motorways — pull left and right.
